Early products rarely need more charts. They need a small set of signals that tell the team where to look next. Every metric on the main dashboard should connect to a decision the team is willing to make.

A dashboard should change a decision

Start with the value loop

Track the journey from first meaningful action to repeated value, then connect it to revenue.

  • Activation: users reaching the first valuable outcome.
  • Retention: users repeating that outcome in a useful window.
  • Value delivery: successful jobs, time saved, or work completed.
  • Revenue quality: expansion, churn, and payment health.

Pair every total with context

A large total can hide a shrinking product. Always pair totals with a comparison period, a meaningful segment, and the denominator behind the rate. The goal is understanding—not decoration.
